Book bans, ban knowledge. Support Garrett staff today.

Banning books is always the wrong side of history.
I am writing to strongly oppose the recent decision to remove six books from the high school English curriculum, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, A Thousand Splendid Suns, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Brave New World, A Handmaid’s Tale, and Forrest Gump.

This action disregards the professional judgment of teachers, disrupts student learning weeks into the school year, and misuses SEA 442, which applies to “instruction on human sexuality,” not the above books with serious literary merit, taught by in classes not affiliated with sexual education. Families already have the right to decide what their own children read and this decision takes that choice away and imposes it on everyone.

Book banning has no place in our schools. Please reverse this decision and trust our educators to do the jobs they are trained to do.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

This decision misuses SEA 442, overrides teachers’ expertise, and takes away families’ rights to choose for their own children.
