Please attend Dec 5th Rutherford County School Board Meeting

CALL TO ACTION:  We are asking those that believe in the first amendment and those who support our librarians to attend the Dec. 5th school board meeting at 5:30 PM. Please arrive 45-60 minutes early.

We have been made aware that the white shirt group is planning a large showing. We need people in purple (or holding something purple) physically in the audience to show the board that the white shirts are but a small, albeit vocal, minority in our the community. Please plan on attending (bring your friends!) and help spread the word. 

BACKGROUND: Rutherford County School district has removed 196 books from it’s libraries since last winter.

A group that wears white shirts has been showing up in large numbers and encouraging our school board to remove materials from the school libraries because of their content.

Rutherford County Library Alliance (RCLA) respects the expertise of our highly educated and trained expert librarians, to curate their collections to meet the needs of ALL students. They are trained to understand how the first amendment applies to libraries and that there are certain things they can, and cannot, do legally, while maintaining library collections.

RCLA is asking the Rutherford County school board to trust our librarians and follow their recommendations. We also ask that they follow the law properly, by recognizing  the supremacy clause which makes a state law invalid and unenforceable if it violates the constitution or federal law. It also includes following the Supreme Court definition of obscene which is the ONLY way you can legally restrict access to information based on content.
