Last night’s BOE decision to relocate The Upside of Unrequited to the high school was a clear example of what can happen when board members have an agenda to restrict students’ freedom to read, all under the guise of ‘protecting’ them. Nobody is protected when local government, like the board of education, takes drastic action that affects all students based on the complaint of ONE parent of ONE child. The board needs to be accountable to follow policy 9130, which states that instructional materials cannot be removed because the content is offensive to some.
